Sea Sniper was originally founded in 2003 by freedivers Chay Ochoa, Chris Chaput, and Daniel Van Huysteen in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their mission was to provide innovative products to the worldwide spearfishing community. It was when Daniel passed away suddenly in 2013 that we began honoring him with an annual friendly tournament here at Sea Sniper Baja. This year’s event included sixteen participants, lots of good memories, big fish, a live rock & roll band, and raising money for his children’s college fund. Here’s what Alex Reynaud had to say:
2017 DVH Invitational
The 2017 DVH is in the books and it was a great event! This is such a special 5 days of spearfishing, and it’s a true honor to be part of something memorable for Daniel’s family. On a personal note, I truly wish I had the chance to meet Daniel before he passed, as the stories and the tales of his humor and diving talent are a loss to us all.
Our good friends Chris Chaput & Bryan Johnson put a ton of effort into bringing everyone together for this event every year and do an amazing job. With so many different people and different skill levels, some real effort went into blending it all together and creating a perfect recipe of fun, safety and pure spearfishing joy.
And what more can you say about Chay and Sea Sniper Baja! If you haven’t arranged a trip yet, you are missing out on one of the greatest diving and spearfishing experiences in the world. This was my 3rd trip and each seems to somehow “out class” the prior. From the accommodations, to the food, to the quality and focus of the panga captains, the entire operation is top shelf. You don’t have to think about anything except enjoying the adventure.
See you in 2018!
